What to Wear to a Golf Tournament: Spectator Attire
If you thought that attending a golf tournament as a spectator was as simple as securing a ticket and turning up, think again. A dress code applies both to people watching the game and those playing it – and mastering the former can be a challenge. The goal is to avoid looking like you're about to tee off, but instead, blend in with sophistication and style. Keep reading to find out how to dress for a golf tournament.
In general, you should take a modest, sensible approach to your golf tournament ensemble. Indeed, it’s worth bearing in mind that you can even be asked to leave if you do not follow the rules – including dress code rules. Here are a few of the most common guidelines for spectator attire.
Common Dress Codes
Anything too casual is the biggest no-no when it comes to suitable golf tournament attire – think tank tops or halter tops, jeans, cut-off shorts, and flip flops. If you’d wear it to the beach, it’s probably not appropriate for a golf tournament.

Women have a few different options from men when it comes to appropriate golf tournament attire, although some basic guidelines are key and help maintain the professionalism of the event.
In general, however, a cute tournament-appropriate outfit should be clean, classy, and comfortable. Color is definitely acceptable, though if you’re going for a bold or vibrant hue, ensure it doesn’t draw too much attention to you or potentially distract any players. You want to stand out for a good reason – not a distasteful one.
Below are some of the key pieces to consider including in your spectator wardrobe.
Women’s Tops
Similar to if you’re playing a round of golf, women can wear short sleeve and sleeveless shirts to a golf tournament. Mock collars are also acceptable. Avoid spaghetti straps, halter tops, racerback or other workout tops, and anything too revealing.
Women’s Jackets and Outerwear
If you need to be prepared for the elements, a golf jacket should be a non-negotiable. Choose a windbreaker that’s lightweight and breathable, or opt for mid layers if you think a jacket might be too heavy.
Women’s Pants and Skirts
Pants, shorts, skirts, a dress, or even a hybrid of these – a skort, perhaps, or cropped trousers – are all options for women looking for a cute golf tournament outfit. Just avoid anything too short and opt for classic fabrics like cotton, rather than denim. Plus, don’t forget you’ll be outdoors – a pair of white trousers or a white skirt might look smart, but they might be an impractical choice if the golf course is likely to get muddy.
Women’s Headgear
A good hat or visor is a must if you’re attending a golf tournament – whether as a player or a spectator. Obviously, this is to protect you from the elements, so ensure yours has a brim that’s wide enough to shield you from the sun.
Women’s Footwear
Forget flip flops or high heels: flat loafers, golf shoes, or trainers are the best option when it comes to suitable shoes for a golf tournament. Not only will they be comfortable – you will spend a great deal of the day on your feet, after all – but they’re also practical on grass or soft earth.
A Few Other Things to Bring
Prepare for a golf tournament the way you might prepare for any day spent outdoors: by packing a high SPF factor sunscreen and bug spray, for starters. Beyond that, if possible, you’ll likely want a pair of binoculars so you can zoom right in on the action – as well as your smartphone, to take all the photos you want (just be sure to keep it on silent!).
Check the specific rules of the tournament to check if you’re allowed to bring a bag or backpack: if so, choose one that’s not too large (the tournament may also have size restrictions on bags), and consider including a small umbrella and a portable folding chair (once again, only if allowed).
If you’re bringing children, be sure to ensure they are also dressed appropriately in youth golf apparel and are briefed on appropriate behavior: ideally no tantrums, please!
